During the spring of the year when lent is at hand and Easter is a mere 10 weeks away pancakes are on many peoples minds. The Tuesday before lent begins is traditionally pancake Tuesday. The origins of pancake Tuesday go back to when eggs, sugar and butter were not allowed during lent so people needed to use up these ingredients before lent began. Since eggs, sugar and butter are primary ingredients in pancakes we now have pancake Tuesday.

Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent

Mardi Gras is the last day of feasting and ends the day before Lent begins. This is why, in New Orleans, Mardi Gras ends abruptly at midnight as Ash Wednesday begins. Police usher party goers out of the area, while street sweepers clear the debris from the roadway.

Pancakes are eaten in the United Kingdom and many other countries on this day, whilst in other parts of the world Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is also known as Tuesday of Carnival or Mardi Gras French for "Fat Tuesday". Pancakes Served hot with sugar and lemon juice; maple syrup/chocolate sauce and cream or any topping of your choice.
