David Little
Digital signage is an industry dependent on evolving communication technologies. The really cool part is that every one of us has a hand in this by the way we are using digital devices in our day-to-day lives. 2012 has been a banner year for digital signage as the industry adapts and integrates these technologies in many helpful ways.

January usually isn't regarded as the big month for blockbuster releases, but this year has seen some notable exceptions; below are four of the most important releases of January 2013. "The Last Stand" What would American cinema be like without the good old blockbuster? The Surveillance State Through the PRISM of Fiction
by
Tony MC
Few sci-fi writers of the past could have envisaged a future where we are all Little Brothers, constantly 'spying' on our friends and family through Facebook and Twitter; and gladly giving away our own geolocations, timelines, photos, curriculum vitae, uninformed opinions and television viewing habits for others to spy on... including Big Brothers like the NSA, GCHQ and their Chinese counterparts.

Key Digital Trends in 2013
by
George Deeb
Here are the key digital trends for 2013: Consumers Taking Control from Brands/ Brand Shouting Evolves to Consumer Listening via Personalized Omni-Channel Techniques. Brands no longer have control of a one-directional conversation with their customers, where they shoutout mass-marketing messages and force feed consumers one-size-fits-all products they may or may not want. Enter the era of omni-channel marketing, that puts the customer at the center of all business decisions leading to highly personalized products and user experiences based on listening to the desires of their consumers. This evolution will material benefit both the consumer, through personalization, and the brand, who will now have a direct communication line into their customers. This shift will ultimately hurt and disintermediate retailers, who have historically controlled all communications with customers as the intermediary for the brands. Look for brands to evolve social media marketing efforts from buying display ads pushing products, to buying social listening research to help learn what consumers want.

Lessons On Surveillance From "1984"
by
Patrick Ord
With the recent revelations centered on government surveillance, interest has surged in George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. Orwell's prescient work explores how a futuristic totalitarian state tracks every citizen's move. As we, as a society, debate the trade-offs between privacy and security, let's not forget what Orwell said was the true tragedy of a constantly monitored State.

Cricket Between England and Australia Before 1882
by
Keith Faunch
Whilst the birth of the Ashes can accurately be dated to 1882, before that date there were a number of cricket matches between England and Australia. Although there were a number of professional leagues in the north of England, it was seen by many as an amateur sport played in the main by the upper classes. That said, the early matches were privately funded affairs and, similar to other contests of the time, most matches were against odds.
