The 25th March 2007 marked 200 years since the abolition of slavery act in the United Kingdom. This act brought an end to over 250 years of a cruel and barbaric trafficking of up to 15 million African's during this time, who were taken from their native homelands that were then forced to work on the plantations in the West Indies to meet the ever increasing demand for cheap labour.

The discovery of the Americas by Columbus in 1492 initiated a wave of European immigration towards the west. Many European nations set out across the Atlantic to explore, conquer and colonise huge territories of what are now known as the Northern and Southern American continents. So as to maintain the smooth running of these colonies, these nations brought with them black African slaves. It is interesting to examine how, under different influences and oppressions, the descendants of these slaves have developed to form significantly different cultures. Today, a very noticeable contrast can be seen between the populations of Central and South America when compared to the black societies of North America. This contrast is particularly distinct in regards to their music.

Equiano was born in what he described as 'a charming fruitful vale, named Essaka' which was so considerably removed from the sea coast that he even admits of never having heard of white men or Europeans, nor of the sea. His father as he recalls was one of the village elders upon whose shoulders the responsibilities of running the administration of the village rested. Thick mark across the lower part of his forehead was a mark of the highest distinction which his father proudly displayed always.
