You would be forgiven for thinking the French players are showbiz celebrities rather than sportsmen. They are in the news for all the wrong reasons. The fact that they are in a relatively weak group A in the FIFA World Cup appears to have made them overconfident, and their lazy demeanour only serves to compound the showbiz impression.

Anelka Gets 18 Game Ban For World Cup Horror

Nicolas Anelka's international career seems all but over after the French player was punished with an 18 match ban for the team revolt, against coach Domenech at the world cup, in which Anelka was a principal participant. Anelka, 31, was sent back from South Africa after he insulted the coach during France's 2-0 loss to Mexico in their group match. Given the length of the punishment, it is unlikely that Anelka will ever play for France again.

This was a snooze fest contested by 2 teams that were more interested in not losing than winning. It was Fabio Capello's 2nd game in charge of England and all the hype was around David Beckham's 100th cap. It also marked Rio Ferdinand's 1st game as captain for his country. Quite why Capello insists on rotating the captaincy is open to debate. But he likes to do things like these that do not help in the long run. He says he would rotate the captaincy until August before he picks a permanent captain, which does not make any sense at all.

It is still a wonder to me that every time I tune to paramount comedy, I do not see Sepp Baltter and his cohorts on that particular channel as their brand of wit would surely be classified as sarcasm.
