Borat - Orientalist Satire for Make Glorious Debate Western Intelligentsiya
by
Richard Andrew Hall
Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 film Borat has generated a great amount of popular and scholarly debate. Who was he making fun of in the film? Why exactly was Borat from Kazakhstan? Why did he come to the US
A, i.e. America? Who suffers because of Borat? Is/was it ok to laugh? Did audiences understand Baron Cohen's intended lessons? If not, what did they walk away from the film thinking? This article delves into these questions and compares Borat to other post-communist, arguably Orientalist portrayals such as Molvania.

Movie Review - Hugo (2011) (PG)
by
Chris Pandolfi
The genius of Martin Scorsese's Hugo is not just that it employs the latest in filmmaking technology, but that it employs them in a story about how filmmaking itself came to be. This is a subject near and dear to Scorsese, who, apart from directing and producing, is renowned for his work as a film historian (he's the co-founder of The Film Foundation and the World Cinema Foundation, both nonprofit organizations dedicated to the preservation of film).

Movie Review: The Dictator (2012)
by
Joel Massie
It's always been entertaining to see Sacha Baron Cohen disappear into an overly eccentric character and the surrounding "real" world attempt to adapt to his presence. In The Dictator, the approach differs greatly from both Borat and Bruno in that Aladeen is displayed as a hokey mockery - and an equally farcical host of caricatures encircles him. The whole affair is presented as a parody and not reality, and worse yet Aladeen feels utterly fictitious.
