Can Auto Racing Be Green?

Last year in Australia the Adelaide Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar auto-race claimed to be carbon neutral but the corporation regulators the ACCC, made them withdraw this claim as it was false and misleading. This year the same event is claiming "green" on their official website because the V8 cars are running on 85% ethanol. While I think this move to lower petroleum fuel is to be applauded, fuel used by a single class of vehicles in the carnival does NOT make the event green. Motor racing has some notable pluses but if it claims to have a sustainable carbon footprint, it has a very long way to go. At the moment these claims are nothing more than a bad case of "greenwash".
